It's a challenge - - but it can very fruitful!
By talking with US manufacturers about exporting to Europe, we found that manufacturers typically assume the ensuing challenges to be very costly to overcome - - - and they are right - - - unless these challenges are tackled by individuals with "hands-on" experience in planning, organizing and managing successful export sales.
What challenges? Well, here are a few:
1. Find international marketing/sales management talent, experienced in international business practices, preferably multi-lingual, ready to get going, without coaxing them out of competition, or without extensive in-house training 2. Design an export marketing game-plan that will build long-term loyalty within your overseas partners (which, most likely, will be Distributors) - as you know, business practices are different overseas - even each overseas country has specific singularities (which makes export so interesting!) 3. Be familiar with every aspect of export logistics - and, as you may guess, there are many crucial details to be attended to - preliminary regulatory compliances, export documentation, export packaging requirements, freight forwarding, import duties, VAT representation - to name a few 4. Export Pricing - perhaps the 2nd most critical factor in successful exporting (ask me which I think is the 1st) - needs to be defined with a "global" perspective in mind, and with due regard to competitive practices. 5.The incoming flow of cash - dependent on terms of payment and banking arrangements, need to meet the needs of both your overseas Clients/Distributors and your Company requirements
